The Laureus World Sports 2021
Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier global sporting awards ceremony. Each year, the Academy honours the greatest achievements and
individuals from across the sporting landscape and celebrate the power of sport to change the world.
- The first ceremony was held on 25 May 2000 in Monte Carlo, at which Nelson Mandela gave the keynote speech.
- It is known as the ‘Oscar of Sports’, the awards honor the greatest achievers in a calendar year.
- Swiss tennis player Roger Federer holds the record for the most awards with six, five for Sportsman of the Year and one for Comeback of the Year.
Laureus World Sports Awards 2021
- The 21st edition of the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards 2021 ceremony virtuallay conducted from Seville, Spain.
- All the winners of the Laureus World
Sports Awards 2021 were unveiled online from the Spanish city due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spain’s Rafael Nadal was named
–> the 2021 Laureus Sportsman of the year, while fellow tennis player Naomi Osaka won the top women’s honour.
Japan’s Osaka won her second U.S.
–> Open title last year, while Nadal equalled Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slam titles by claiming his 13th French Open crown.
Nadal picked up his fourth Laureus honour, having previously scooped the 2006 Breakthrough, 2014 Comeback and 2011 men’s individual awards.
Britain’s Formula One world
–> champion Lewis Hamilton claimed the inaugural Athlete Advocate of the Year Award for his involvement in the fight against racism.
